THE ABSENCE OF ROBUST POLICIES WITHIN THE EDUCATION SECTOR THE ROOT TO SEVERAL OF THE ISSUES

Former Director of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Institute of Education Dr. Sandy Harrigan-Underhill believes there is an absence of robust policies within the BVI’s education system, which has resulted in a number of the existing issues in schools across the territory to date.

Dr. Harrigan-Underhill who is contesting the upcoming general election as the National Democratic Party’s District Four candidate, made the comment while appearing on 284 Media’s Just for the Record election series programme.

She emphasised the need for more robust policies within the sector, an area she said she will seek to address if elected into office.

The former educator also spoke on the need to implement policies that bridge the gap between the different phases of the education sector, which she said would link a steady progression from the preschool level straight to the college level.

Dr. Harrigan-Underhill who is also a former principal at the now-Elmore Stoutt High School also took time to address the policy of the additional school year which was discontinued from being a mandatory requirement following backlash from several parents.

She said more needed to be done by the Ministry of Education to market the additional year and pointed to the outstanding results of BVI students during the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations following directly after its implementation as proof of the effectiveness of the police.
