EARLY CHILDHOOD AWARENESS WEEK 2023

This week the British Virgin Islands, through the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, observes early childhood awareness week under the theme “Supporting Early Childhood Development”.

Minister for Education, Youth Affairs and Sports Honourable Sharie de Castro opened the week with a statement on Monday.

As she welcomed the observation and its theme, de Castro noted the importance of early childhood development to the sustainability and growth of the society.

The minister went on to explain the importance of ensuring that children are exposed to a nurturing environment and caretakers who understand their role at this critical stage in human development.

As the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports continues to pursue its vision of reimagining education in the Virgin Islands, de Castro noted that a key step in that regard would be to achieve its legislative mandate.

She has also urged stakeholders and employers to ensure that their policies are family-friendly.

The Ministry is collaborating with the Institute of Education at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College to provide training and continuous professional development for early childhood practitioners.

Throughout this week, the Ministry is undertaking various activities to get the community involved and informed in that effort.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate.
